BELFAST — The UK has announced it will procure 72 Remote Controlled Howitzers 155mm (RCH 155) under a future contract valued at close to £1 billion ($1.35 billion), with first deliveries slated to begin in 2028.
The new guns, mounted on Boxer armored vehicles, are capable of firing eight rounds per minute at targets out to 70 kilometres, the British Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Advanced automation of the turret allows the platform to be operated at the push of a button from the crew compartment by just two soldiers,” it added.
The order has long been held up by delays to the Defence Investment Plan, which is expected to outline British equipment priorities over the 10 years.
Approval of the RCH 155 acquisition will provide the UK with a long-term, close support artillery capability that has been lacking since the British Army gifted AS90 systems to Ukraine in 2023.
The Archer system, made by BAE Systems Bofors in Sweden, will remain an interim solution until the RCH 155 begins operations.
The MoD said that the new howitzer deal will be contracted by Europe’s Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), on behalf of the British Army to ARTEC, a joint venture between the Franco-German company KNDS and Rheinmetall. In addition to the advanced guns, the contract is also set to include training and in-service support.
Rheinmetall’s large-caliber production site in Telford, England, will manufacture the RCH 155 weapon system, comprising barrel, breech, recoil systems, and trunnions. Production will also be supported by British steel supplied through Sheffield Forgemasters, England.
Additionally, “the BOXER drive module — chassis, engine, drive train — that the weapon system sits on will be manufactured by KNDS UK in Stockport,” the British MoD noted in its statement.
The RCH 155 program is a joint effort between the British and German armies, central to their land modernization ambitions and NATO cooperation. The British acquisition “builds on” the Trinity House agreement struck between the UK and Germany in 2024, the MoD stated.
